We were looking for a weekend to disconnect and Costa Brava is one of this places that evades you. We loved Begur since the first time we went, it was a safe place to go and enjoy, good food, nice walks along the beach and some sunbathing. This time, we decided to spend a long weekend, three days so we looked for hotels in Begur and we were recommended Hotel Eetu, a designed hotel near the beach.
Begur is a lovely town in Costa Brava, a stone town full of surprises, it has a medieval castle and the town is famous for having a wide variety of houses from "Indians" -Catalans who made good money in the Americas- on XIX century. These Indians went to the Americas emigrating from a crisis in Spain and came back to their town of origin, Begur with their fortunes and built their houses.
There are two defense towers in town that were used to seek shelter when the pirates that sailed the Mediterranean attacked Begur. See below one of the towers from VI century, called Pella i Forgas called this way due to his previous owner that kept her until the beginning XX century.
In every interesting building there is an explanation of its history, the name of the building and why it is important, I liked that very much as when walking around you can discover the different families and stories behind those walls. There is so much to do in town, but one of the must do's is to discover the incredible beaches in Begur, Costa Brava.
The water is cool all year around, they have a mild temperature in summer, but do not expect hot water, I got into the water in May and it was freezing, a couple of minutes in and out, only for brave ones. If you like to go shopping Begur might be your place too, the shops are so my style so I couldn't help it and get in to every single one of them. They are beach style clothes, comfy, colorful made of cotton mostly, there are design shops and traditional shops as well so there is a bit for everyone.
Where to stay in Begur: Hotel EetuThe hotel Eetu in Begur is a design hotel, I was very surprised with the attention to detail, lovely minimalist but designed rooms, fluffy towels, and slippers and rituals soap, body lotion and shampoo in the rooms.
Every room has its own terrace, always nice to be out and have a drink on the outside, the room also has a minibar that is a little fridge so you are able to cool your own stuff if needed. Rooms go from 120 euros with breakfast a double room, Hotel Eetu is part of Domus selecta, hotels with charm. No wonder, it is truly a discovery, a 3-star hotel that it is easily a 4 star with its service and accommodation.
The breakfast was great, I love local products and I always thought that less quantity and more quality, there are different choices every day and there is: fruit (cleaned and sliced) and also full pieces to choose, cured meat -Iberian ham and fuet- and cheese all accompanied with good virgin olive oil, rubbed tomato and garlic.
They have different kinds of bread, I loved the pumpkin seeds one, but there was a cereal bread and standard bread. Cereals, yogurts and a wide variety of sweet treats, croissants, muffins, and different kinds of tarts and cakes. A Nespresso coffee machine is also waiting for you.
When we were looking for restaurants in Begur, of course, we wanted to try the best one, and we found out that Turandot was number 1 in Trip Advisor so we had to try it out and we were not disappointed.
Romantic atmosphere with low lights, and designed fusion dishes of Catalan cuisine, with all the old flavors of Catalan traditional cuisine but with a new format and combination of ingredients.
We had an artichoke foam with a poached egg and black sausage, a black risotto with baby cuttlefish, a roasted chicken cannelloni with foie sauce and Empordà duck with Japanese veggies. The average price with wine is around 30/35 euros per person, but I totally recommend this restaurant in Begur, very good dishes, and atmosphere, and it is a good chance to pamper yourself!!
Disclaimer: the stay at hotel Eetu has been complimentary thanks to theTBEX conference in Costa Brava.
