Besalú: a medieval town in Catalonia

Besalú: a medieval town in Catalonia

Besalú is a beautiful medieval town in Girona area and we had a guided tour around, the best choice as there are many stories and history to learn from a well-preserved medieval town.Around IX Besalú became an independent county that didn't belong anymore to the influence of Girona. Around the year 1000, Besalú was one of the most important Catalan counties, one of the reasons due to its market and commercial routes that gathered artisans, business men and peasant farmers.Lots of people from the surroundings went to Besalú to selltheir products, and with the earnings they invested in products that were produced in the same town, so Besalú developed different kinds of artisans and shops such as shoemakers, weavers and carpenters among others. The origin of the city was the castle of Besalú …

This time we discovered Rafael Masó architecture and we were impressed with this architect and his work. There are different buildings from Masó in the city of Girona such as Farmàcia Masó Puig and Casa Cots as examples but the most famous one is probably his family house, the House Masó that can be recognised from the river Onyar for being the only house painted in white.Rafael Masó architectHe was one of the most important Catalan architects from the beginning of XX century. Melià Girona

Celebrities and famous people inspired by Costa Brava

It is no secret that the Costa Brava has many fans around the world, but this is not a new trend, it has been a preferred destination for decades for famous people, artists and intellectuals. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Costa Brava started to place herself in the international map. Let's do a tour around Costa Brava through the eyes of the famous ones. Hollywood stars in Costa Brava If we think about Ava Gardner in Catalonia the first place that comes to mind is Tossa de Mar where on 1951 it was filmed Pandora and the flying Dutchman, and shared the big screen with the actor James Mason. In Tossa you can still see this time when Gardner filmed, and to honor her the town built a statue of her in a viewpoint of the fortress. Toss de Mar was full of gossip at that time, it…

Cadaqués fishermen's town, Dalí's inspiration

Cadaqués fishermen's town, Dalí's inspiration

Cadaques is a beautiful town in Costa Brava that reminds me of Greece, with white houses and blue windows and doors, a fishermen town that still has this old vibe with wooden shop windows, stone streets and wood boats waiting to be sailed. Dalí has strong ties to this town and he decided to have his residence very near, in Portlligat where Dalí's studio was, a great opportunity to visit it as well. If you are not convinced about Cadaquès yet, watch the video below it will give you a good taste of how beautiful it is. What to do in Cadaquès You have to walk and get lost in Cadaquès old town, stone streets, lovely shops, smell good paellas from the street and all alogn with the sea brize. Salvador Dalí's house in Portlligat

Salvador Dalí's house in Portlligat

Dalí is a very famous Catalan artist with a bizarre personality and known by his eccentricity. He was born in Figueres in 1904 and enrolled in a French school, he would use french later on in his essays and works. His father was not very keen with Dalí's aim to become an artist, but he decided that if he had to go that path at least he got the most of education in that field. The father's desire was that at least he could qualify to be a teacher on the field. He studied art at the Figueres Municipal Drawing School and then he enrolled in Madrid in an arts school. We not only painted but also wrote articles and essays on art and met famous intellectuals of the time such as Federico Garcia Lorca, they became good friends. Llança: off the beaten track in Costa Brava

Llança: off the beaten track in Costa Brava

Llançà is a place that brings memories, I lived in Llançà for three months when I was 18 years old, it was my first job related to hospitality in Grifeu -a beach area outside the town-. Three months in Llançà allowed me to know very well the town so I hope I can help you discover a little gem in Costa Brava that it might not be that known. I was young and it was my first true working experience, 6 days a week 8 hours a day in my internship being in the reception of the hotel. I had no clue how to start and we had the hotel full of french customers so I had to make an effort and speak the little french I knew. I used to eat a daily menu at Llançà Port and at le Proveçal, they are both near the harbour, for a pizza we went to Pizzeria l'Italia, they have a little terrace outside were you c…

Sant Martí d'Empúries coastal path

Sant Martí d'Empúries coastal path

Sant Martí d'Empúries is a village in the area of the Alt Empordà right at the heart of the Costa Brava. It is located 200m away from the roman and greek ruins of Empúries. The name Empúries comes from the greek name Emporion that means shopping center, but not a mall as we know it nowadays but a place where different comercial routes crossed and had a natural harbour that offered protection to their ships. The first greek settlement goes back to the VI century and was located where now is Sant Martí d'Empúries, called Palaià Pois. At the time, Sant Martí was an isthmus and the greeks settled there due to the strategic position in the Mediterranean, although it was never totally abandoned the settlement lost importance with time. At some point after the decline of the roman empire in the…

Coastal path in Begur: unspoilt beaches in Catalonia

Coastal path in Begur: unspoilt beaches in Catalonia

One of the things I loved the most in Begur, is that you can walk from coves and small creeks following the coastal path. The coastal footpath is called, Camí de Ronda, these paths used to follow all the coast and were used by tobacco smugglers and also fishermen to avoid being discovered. It was a safe route that winds around the coast through narrow streets, private houses, little bays, beach sand, and stone stairs up and down the hills. It is perfect to discover Costa brava's coast and enjoy every step discovering new places. Nowadays they are used as the access to the beach and also a great walk following the coast, I totally recommended. The paths are not difficult to walk, so you can even do it carrying your towel and in flip flops, at least some parts. Camí de Ronda: Coas…

Girona temps the flors is a famous flower festival in Gironathat takes place once a year on spring to see the city decorated with flowers on monuments, streets, patios and little spaces all of them are filled with flower arrangements and topics around gardening and plants. You are given a map like this one, map girona temps de flors, to discover the city and it will show you the different locations where there are flow…

Weekend in Platja d'Aro: Aparthotel Ciutat de Palol

My story begins a Friday, getting out from work in a rush to get home and have all the stuff ready to go. We went to take the car, and guess what we couldn't find the car...We thought that they took out the car, so we were calling the company but they didn't take it.. And in the end, we remembered that we park it somewhere else last time. So there we were going to the right car park in the end… So that was the start of a relaxed weekend in Platja d'Aro in Aparthotel Ciutat de Palol. By the time we got there it was very dark and we had dinner in the apartment fuet (dry sausage) with rustic bread and watch the news. Next day we were not very lucky as it was pouring down all day, we planned to have breakfast in the terrace but no chance… I loved the place, I have never been before and I…

The opening night started with some cava and a speech and right after that with a fantastic performance of els Marrecs de Salt, els castellers. For those who are not familiar wi…
