Montserrat Monastery

Montserrat is a lot of things in the very same word, it is known as the place where Monastery the Montserrat is, in a special mountain that has a unique shape and there is the Black Madonna of Montserrat. Many women in her 40s or 50s are called Montserrat in Catalonia, is a very typical name and every Catalan has gone to Montserrat at least once in a lifetime and there is no need to be a religious person.Montserrat has become part of the culture and the Catalan identity and goes far beyond religion, is our spiritual place for peace of mind. I have heard many stories of self-discovery and even illumination in the mountain, I am not a believer and I won't tell you what to believe in but believe or not, if there is one thing I am certain is that it is a special place for different reasons.Th…

A romantic getaway in Montseny at Can Cuch

Barcelonins as we call the citizens of Barcelona, we always have a perfect excuse to go for a weekend getaway, we actually have quite a fame in the rest of Catalonia and they gave us different nicknames al related about our behaviour when we go out.In the rest of Catalonia they call us: "pixa pins" (pee on pines literally) and "quemacus" (how nice literally), they say that we always find everything nice everywhere we go and since we go to the mountain at the weekends we pee on the pines we find, theie is how it is, I guess every culture has its own nicknames for some true behaviours. I believe we deserve the fame we got but it is for a good reason, we want to go out and visit places. We needed a romantic getaway but near Barcelona and we were recommended Can Cuch, a very special hotel n…

Amazing live Pessebre of old crafts in Sant Guim de la…

Catalonia has many christmas traditions, but one of them is live nativity scenes, called pessebres. We went to spent a weekend in La Segarra area, in Catalonia and they recommended us to visit the live pessebre of old crafts in Sant Guim de la Plana. Pessebre of Sant Guim de la Plana We thought that it was a good chance to see a live nativity scene, but we couldn't imagine how it would be, as we thought the people in the pessebre would actually move, but the didn't...We were all amazed on how well they were performing, not even a blink, all the pessebre is done by people standing in the scenes and doing old crafts without moving. It is also very special the location where it is done, it is a unique place, the medieval part of town of Sant Guim that includes particular houses, streets, s…

Mont-Rebei's gorge, a weekend out from Barcelona

Mont-Rebei's gorge, a weekend out from Barcelona

Barcelona is beautiful and there are thousands of things to do, but I always love to get out and go discover new places in Catalonia. I went to spent a weekend in Aramunt, Pallars Jussà. They recommend us that on our way back to Barcelona we stopped at Mont Rebei's gorge, a beautiful natural park that offers a 1 hour route to observe this natural beauty. At first the route can appear to be a bit challenging, as it is a curvy and tiny motorway but I can assure it is worth while the effort, the images speak for themselves. Mont-Rebei's gorge is the only one in Catalonia that preserves their natural area with no motorway or human construction. The only way to go through it is walking in a little road digged in the rock. The walls of the gorge can be 500 metres high in some parts and even 2…

Hostal Sport in Falset: feeling like home

I can't help it, I am a city girl and you know how much I love Barcelona but as city lovers sometimes we need to get away, we need some time with nature to scape our comfort zone. So there I was in Reus and Falset for two days, a friend of mine invited me in Hostal Sport, we were told that they have a very good restaurant so there we were eager to discover it. We had to stay somewhere near Reus so what a good opportunity to get to know a new place. We arrived at Hostal Sport around 19pm and I was very pleased with our room, very big and with two bathrooms for just the two of us, so no girl fight in the morning! This is always a plus. We went for a walk around falset and wine is all around, shops full of wine and olive oil -I couldn't resist and I bought a bottle of "arbequina" olives…

Terres de l'Ebre is an amazing place, full of rice fields, farmers and agriculture all around but one of the main things in the area in the Ebre river that gives live to the place. There are a lot of options to visit and go around the Ebre river, there are ferries where you can get in with your own car, private excursions, hourly boats that go up and down the river etc... There is another option that we did not know about until this last time we went, you can drive your own boat. Green adventures rents boats by the hour and you can go on your own to discover river Ebre. Roger was driving, after few instructions from the company on how to drive it, stop and what to do in case of an emergency we were good to go. Enoturism in Catalonia: wine tasting course

Enoturism in Catalonia: wine tasting course

Catalonia is a land of wine, no wonder that there are plenty of enotourism experiences to try. I picked J.Miquel Jané cellar to go for a three-hour wine course that included a vineyard exploration, the production machines and the visit of the cellar apart of the wine tasting course. We got there by car as it is an isolated place, a very nice area in the surroundings of Guardiola de Font Rubí a little town in Penedès. For the ones who don't know Penedès yet, it is the cathedral of Wine in Catalonia.Penedès: the star area of Wine in CataloniaPenedès was a famous place even in roman times, the romans introdcued the vine and the agriculture when they arrived in Catalonia. In Vilafranca del Penedès town, they have the museum of wine and it has been assured that in Penedès area there were vines…

Fresh cow milk vending machine in Puigcerdà!

Fresh cow milk vending machine in Puigcerdà!

I have never seen a fresh cow milk vending machine, first time ever in Puigcerdà. It looks like now it is quite spread around North Catalonia in the Pyrenees mainly. I would love to have one in Barcelona as this one.I had to try it myself, so there I was like a tourist in my own country touching buttons and reading the instructions. There is a vending machine for the plastic bottles and they are 1 euro each, but you can also bring your own bottle and refill it, so then we recycle as good citizens. So once you have your bottle you select 1l of milk for example, and a song starts as if you were watching cartoons, so I felt like a little girl in a kinder garden. And then you can see that your bottle starts to get full with the milk you requested. An amazing vending machine, and right after …

Hotel Món and Mont Sant Benet, a cultural complex

Hotel Món and Mont Sant Benet, a cultural complex

Mont Sant Benet is a cultural complex found in Sant Benet de Bages in Catalonia. The complex includes a hotel, a medieval monastery, the Alícia foundation by Ferran Adrià and the summer residence of the Catalan painter Ramón Casas. All this complex is surrounded by the natural park of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac. I loved that place since the first day I stayed in, we had a romantic weekend away and since it is near Barcelona is easy to go and return the same day if needed, it is 50 minutes far from Barcelona. It is a different concept, it is not a resort or anything like that but more a cultural complex where you can find cultural activities and monuments in the same space and also having all the advantages of a hotel and Alicia Foundation in the gastronomic site to offer workshops r…

We will discover Puigcerdà and Llívia that are in the northern part of Catalonia and the town Villefranche de Conflent that belongs to France but we call the border between France and Catalonia, Northern Catalonia -as if it was ours, but its not, at least not nowadays-. A day of route by car going around, enjoying landscapes and food and gastronomy of the area. Our tour started in Puigcerdà, at first sight, everything appeared to be closed, and in the end we discovered that we were visiting on a bank holiday in the area. But well we didn't come to shop, we thought...although some cheese and sausages would have been good to buy, but anyway there we were. Puigcerdà is a very nice town with his artificial lake. We saw the church of Sant Tomàs de Ventajola in the town. We went to la Plaça Maj…

Day trip from Barcelona to Rupit and Pruit, beautiful stone towns!

Day trip from Barcelona to Rupit and Pruit, beautiful …

Rupit is a wonderful town in Catalonia, it belongs to the Barcelona area and it is 98km far from Barcelona city. Due to the distance is a perfect day excursion from Barcelona, it is just one hour away from the capital. It is worth it to go for a day trip and visit the town, Rupit and also Pruit that is the next town and they are two "married towns", it is funny enough that they share the same letter of their name. Rupit and Pruit The streets and houses of Rupit are from XVI and XVII centuries, all of them made from stone and this rustic atmosphere gives the town this medieval touch. One of the things to pay attention to is the rock wall that dominates the village. The rock, in Latin called "rupes", is where the castle was built, and from there comes the origin of the name of the village…
