Hostal Spa Empúries is located beside the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries, near l'Escala. It is a privileged location that Romans and Greeks choose to settle centuries ago. Nowadays, this spot in the coast it is an amazing paradise surrounded by nature and ancient ruins, and in this landscape is where hostal spa Empúries stands.
The original construction of the Hostal Empúries is back from 1907, called Villa Teresita when it started the aim of the place was to give food and accommodation to the first archaeologists who went to excavate the ruins. Villa Teresita became the precursor of touristic lodgings as we know them nowadays in Costa Brava's area.
The hostal itself started as a need for the new situation in town, foreigners that needed to live temporarily out of their homes as their job as archaeologists brought them to that town in Costa Brava.
There was a change of management years ago and the hostal was restored to fulfil the needs of the current customers. The hostal wants to become a reference point in regards of Sustainable tourism, and works following principles of ecological responsibility.
The hostal has two parts the old part that remain from Villa Teresita's origins, the main building and the new part that was built afterwards that received the LEED certification and follows sustainability principles.

Sustainability and Eco-tourism in Catalonia
The new Hostal Empúries is an improved facility that takes into account the surroundings, works with ecological principles and lives as part of the landscape and nature of the area.
The Hostal Spa Empúries is the first hotel in Europe to receive the LEED certification. The hostal commits to take preventive action about the destruction of the habitat and plan a better future through ecology and eco-tourism.
As a part of their sustainability plan they follow these principles:
- They have received the certificate of sustainable Architecture "LEED", whose objective is to ensure that a building has a regenerative agent that prevents erosion, improves the quality of water and increases biodiversity.
- Cradle to Cradle Principle C2C: promotes materials that are sustainable and also can be reused and finally be converted into the a new base material. So materials used do not die but emerge new options from it with time to be used again.
Restaurant El Portítxol
We stayed for lunch at the gastronomic restaurant called "El Portítxol" by Rafa Peña that offers creative Mediterranean cuisine, focusing on km0 quality of products to elaborate the dishes.
The first thing that we got addicted to was the olive oil we had in the table: Memoriae. We couldn't stop having bread with oil while waiting the main course.
We had a starter and a main course and dessert menu, what I liked the most was my rice with pumpkin and the desserts mine with chestnut and my colleague's with pineapple.
Restaurant Bistró de Mar
The Bistró is the other restaurant that the hotel has, they offer a variety of tapas and rices among other dishes. We stopped by in 2015 since the location is incredible and I remembered the place from my first stay with them but the truth is that the rice disappointed us, we had a prawn rice that was very dry and with no prawn flavour so definitely we will not repeat again for a full meal, the service was not very good either. If you want to have tapas, they are nice, but do not expect huge dishes, quite minimal, the fried squid was excellent with some spicy pepper on top, and the bravas were ok.
Spa at Hostal Spa Empúries
The hotel has an Spa too, so we had to try it out!! Who doesn't love spas? When you enter there are lockers with all you need: a swimming pool cap, a bathrobe and a towel and a pair of flip flops to go around the spa.
It is a cosy spa, with capacity for 20 people, but for us it was perfect, lucky for us we were on our own, so we were enjoying the spa for ourselves. There is a warm swimming pool 32ºC with a bubble seat, foot massage jets, a swan neck tap and a cobra waterfall. There is a larger swimming pool at 26ºC too. A sauna and a steam room. And what I loved the most is the cold bucket shower, you pull a chain and the whole bucket of cold water falls into your head, it is quite a shock, but very refreshing.
There is the possibility to book treatments in the spa, such as massages and beauty treatments too. There is an exclusive relaxation room for resting before or after the treatments, nice and comfy, all you could expect from a relaxation room.
Disclaimer: The stay, lunch and spa has been offered by Hostal Spa Empuries. As you always know, no one can't buy love so this is my honest opinion on the services offered.
